How do contemporary experimental films such as The Tree of Life, Mulholland Drive and A Field in England challenge the orthodox classical narrative and 5 key plot lines? The tree of life is a contemporary  experimental film, which means that the director had the intention of leaving the audience of the production confused and questioning the narrative. Despite this, the primary feature of a contemporary film is that it does not follow the orthodox classical narrative. As well as this, it does not have to be any of the 5 key plot lines. For example, the production can focus primarily on spectacle as opposed to any feature of sense during the narrative at all. Making an experimental/surrealist short film The surrealist short films we did were mainly based around close up elements of nature being interacted with people. Surrealist Film 1 In the first short film, there is a feeling of amazement and wonder with being surrounded by a natural environment, which is demonstrated through the actor interacting with nature in a delicate way through touch and sight. There is a lack of colour for most of the start of the clip in order to get the audience used to the presence of a black and white colour palette, and more towards the middle of the clip, there are multiple flashes of coloured images of flowers, which surprises the audience. We also decided to make the whole video slow motion, which creates a dreamlike effect. There is also a use of rewinding a scene which can make the audience disorientated or confused.
