How do contemporary experimental films such as The Tree of Life, Mulholland Drive and A Field in England challenge the orthodox classical narrative and 5 key plot lines?

The tree of life is a contemporary experimental film, which means that the director had the intention of leaving the audience of the production confused and questioning the narrative. Despite this, the primary feature of a contemporary film is that it does not follow the orthodox classical narrative. As well as this, it does not have to be any of the 5 key plot lines. For example, the production can focus primarily on spectacle as opposed to any feature of sense during the narrative at all. A film that features this is 'The Tree of Life' as it does not follow the expected narrative of westernised media and productive media.

One way Tree Of Life challenges the orthodox view of film is through having a different order of narrative. Instead of the original beginning, middle and end narrative, the Tree of Life presents an end, middle, beginning narrative. Having the narrative in a foreign order has an effect on the audience because it would seem confusing and disorientating to them, some people may find this interesting, however others might become distressed and irritated by the strange order of the plot. Most films that are filmed now in time almost always have a clear narrative, this means that the audience for film have become accustomed to watching a film with this way, Tree of Life challenges the normal view of film and creates an impact on the modern audience by giving them something they won’t expect.

It also challenges the view of traditional film because there are scenes involved that don’t obviously relate to what was going on in the scene beforehand. For example, in the love and birth scene the scene cuts from two lovers spending time together to a woman and some children dressed in white playing in a forest. This challenges the traditional view of film because the present scenes don’t follow the previous scene with directly related content which doesn’t usually happen in normal films
