Making an experimental/surrealist short film

The surrealist short films we did were mainly based around close up elements of nature being interacted with people.

Surrealist Film 1

In the first short film, there is a feeling of amazement and wonder with being surrounded by a natural environment, which is demonstrated through the actor interacting with nature in a delicate way through touch and sight. There is a lack of colour for most of the start of the clip in order to get the audience used to the presence of a black and white colour palette, and more towards the middle of the clip, there are multiple flashes of coloured images of flowers, which surprises the audience. We also decided to make the whole video slow motion, which creates a dreamlike effect. There is also a use of rewinding a scene which can make the audience disorientated or confused. The music added to the short film has a continuous tone with different, slightly higher pitched tones ringing over the top of it. The music adds to the dreamy atmosphere of the film and creates a calm and meditative mood which pairs well with the slow visual elements of the video.

Surrealist Film 2

In the second short film, there is also a dominant presence of nature, but there are more destructive movements from the characters, for example a piece of bark being ripped off a tree and a hand crushing some petals. There is a large range of colour which is very different to the first film, the use of colour adds to the different senses of the film which amuses the audience. We used a mix of slow motion and fast motion in the editing to create different paces, this would take the audience by surprise because of the dramatic change in pace. The music used in this video is slow paced which goes well with the slow movements and contrasts with the quicker movements.
