Task 3

Singin' in the Rain - 3 scene analysis

Scene 1 - You were meant for me

The costumes in this scene fit really well with the background. Kathy is wearing a lilac dress that matches the backdrop in the scene, the purple in the dress matched with the way it flows represents the calm and dreamy mood of the scene and makes the audience feel the atmosphere that the scene makes. Kathy's outfit may also represent the way she feels towards Don, implying that she's in a dreamlike state. Her makeup is done to make her look innocent and pure, to represent her potential inexperience with romance, or to show her uncertainty towards the situation.
Don's costume also matches the backdrop which creates the illusion that himself and Kathy belong together in the same way as clouds and the sky. Don's outfit is brighter and more bold, however, which shows that he is the dominant role. Don is wearing no makeup which could represent that he has nothing to hide.
The props in this scene are meant to match that of a film set, meaning there are lots of access to lighting and equipment to make the scene perfect, for example wind machines and backdrops.
The location in this scene is in a movie set. This could represent a constructed reality which could represent the way Kathy feels towards Don, in a way that suggests she thinks that his attitude towards her is not true to his actual personality. The movie set also shows how comfortable Don is in it, because he's used to it, and how unsure Kathy is in the movie set because it's a foreign location to her. this could also represent their relationship.
In this scene, the lighting starts of very dark. Don is the person who introduces the lighting which could represent how Don is bringing light to a situation. When Don introduces the light, it's a soft light that makes both Kathy and the audience feel comfortable in the scene. The soft lighting also makes Kathy seem angelic, which could show the audience how Don sees Kathy.
The camera angle and movement in this scene consists of a lot of high angles and long shots in order to show the whole scene as one big picture instead of showing small areas of it. The camera also shows a lot of tracking movements which follow the actors when the dance, the motion of the camera is very smooth and matches the mood of the scene.
The sound in this scene is both diegetic when the two characters are talking together and singing and non-diegetic when the music starts to play as they sing because there is no source of an orchestra or a band playing in the background.
The editing in the scene is edited so the scene has a smooth flow to it. The cuts between the scenes are discrete and makes the movement between scenes seem unnoticeable to the audience, this gives the scene an element of romance because it flows and doesn't cause any distractions to the viewers.

Scene 2 - Good Mornin'

The costumes in this scene fit well together regarding colour and fit nicely with the background, this may cause a feeling of harmony which fits well with the circumstances in the scene. The blue and grey of the costumes go well with the rain that's happening off scene, the colours are traditionally quite cold, sad colours which may create some irony because the three characters are singing about more happier subjects. The men in the scene are not wearing any obvious makeup, however Kathy's bright make-up contrasts with the cold colours of the costumes which creates a more happier mood to the scene. The props in the scene mainly consist of furniture and items that are normally found in a house. The props in this scene are used in a way that are not usually used, for example, the use of a foot stool to stand on or the rain coats as make-shift costumes.
This scene is located in a large house, judging by the size and the amount of valuable items in the house it would most probably be Don's house. because of the size of the house, it is easy for the characters to sing and dance around without any obstructions.
The lighting is a normal white to yellow toned light which makes the light look natural and flattering for the actors. The lighting creates a soft look to the scene which creates a happy atmosphere.
The camera angles in this scene consist of mid shots and long shots which allows the audience to see most of what's going on in the scene and allows them to see the singing and dancing properly. The camera movement is smooth and it moves with the characters whilst they're dancing, using very few cuts or jumps. this makes the scene flow and seem well put together.
The sound is diegetic for the dialogue, singing and the sounds of the dancing and movement because the source of the sound is easily noticeable, however the source of the music is not on screen so the music is non-diegetic.
This scene is edited so that the scene still looks bright and happy even though there is a presence of rain in some of the background. there aren't too many cuts, which makes it easy for the actors to perform the dance without repeats.

Scene 3 - The Opening Scene

The costumes in this scene are very varied depending on the type of person is on screen. The presenter is a very happy lady and her costume matches her personality by having a wide variety of patterns and quite bright colours. The first couple have very different personalities, the man is very refined and he wears a simple black suit with a white scarf and a top hat, the lady is very bubbly and excitable and she wears a lot of fur and feathers, she also wears diamonds and rhinestones which would bring most of the attention to her. The second couple seems more mysterious and dark, the lady wears very dramatic clothes with a lot of sequins which draw attention to her despite the dark colours of her apparel. The man is dressed very similar to the woman regarding the dark colours however he has some red in his outfit which draws attention to him. Cosmo is dressed in a smart suit which is underneath a large dark blue coat, this isn't as extravagant as the other outfits which shows the audience that Cosmo may be not as popular as the other actors. The last couple is Don and Lina who are dressed both in white which is a bold colour, indicating that they're more popular characters. the fur and sparkle on Lina's outfit contribute to the fact that she's a more popular character because of the wealth that must be needed to purchase it. The bright and expensive nature of Lina's costume gives the impression that Lina is a very extravagant character who is very bold and unique. Don's costume is less pronounced than Lina's, he has a more classic look with a beige trench coat and hat which gives off the impression that he is a lot more of a gentleman, but it's still bold enough to show that he has a prominent personality.
The props for the scene are very practical props. There are lots of cameras and lights that are constantly in use which could influence the atmosphere of the film to make it a lot more active and busy. Other props would be the cars, which could be quite difficult to manage because there needs to be a different car for each of the couples.
The scene is located outside a movie theatre which could create irony for the audience because they may have been viewing the film in a cinema themselves. Because the scene is outside and filmed at night, the lighting would have to be bright. Most of the lighting is located on the set of the scene, in front of the camera. It consists of large spotlights and the lights outside of the theatre. Another source of light would be from the car headlights.
The camera angles stay mainly with medium shots and close shots when the actors are in the shot, and then switch to wide shots when dealing with the audience and the setting. This allows the audience to take in the details of the costume and the setting, which would cause excitement because colour wasn't introduced to film until just before the film was made.
The sound in this scene is diegetic because there is a clear source of the sound. The noise from the audience creates a very crowded atmosphere for the scene, along with the cars and the photographers in the background.
