Task 2

The Gold Rush - Take 3 scenes from 'The Gold Rush' (1925) and analyse the micro elements of film form, identifying how these elements construct meaning.

Scene 1 (8:23- 8:45)

In this scene, the costumes of the characters link in with the characters personality quite well, for example, 'Big Jim's' costume is quite bulky with a large fur coat that can be intimidating at times. It's hard to tell if the outfits are meant to be colourful because the film is black and white, however the audience may decide if the character has a colourful or simplistic outfit based on their personality, however in this scene it seems that the colours of the outfits would be quite neutral or dark.

The make up for this scene has to be quite dark to make sure it shows on camera so the cosmetics used on Chaplin is quite dark around the eyes to show that he might be exhausted and tired from his travels.

The props in this scene look worn down and simplistic to show that the owner of the house may not be staying in the residence for a long time, for example, in the cabin, the only props are ones that are necessary for being able to survive. In addition to this, the props used in the scene wouldn't be destroyed easily by the strong winds that are used in the scene.

The location of this scene is most likely filmed in a studio because it would be difficult to film in a location that matches the setting that the director wanted. The scene is set in a small cabin in the middle of a snowstorm near some gold mines in around 1925.

The lighting in this scene is set to look quite natural but bright from the snow. The directors would have recreated the bright light emitted from the snow by setting the cabin scene with a white background so it seems like there's snow, there may also be large lights the assist this. They may have even set up the scene outside.

The camera angles and movement for this scene is very stationary until there are close ups.
The sound in this scene is non diegetic because it is narrated through text and there is music edited/played over the top of the scene.
The only editing used in this scene is where the camera cuts to different angles. There are no special effects used because there was no technology to do so.

The sound in the scene is non-diegetic because there was no microphones to pick up sound in the movie. This means that there would have to be music put in to replace the lack of sound, the music playing would have to match the mood of the scene, in this case it is
quick and continuous which creates excitement for the audience.
The editing in this scene mainly consists of quick and simple cuts from clip to clip. There are no different cuts in the editing because the editing would have had to be done by hand straight onto the film reel.

Scene 2 (16:20-16:40)

This scene shows that the characters costumes are worn to mainly keep them warm in the snow. The clothes are quite bulky and difficult to fight in, which shows the audience that the fight was not prepared for and unexpected.
The props in the scene are very minimal and simplistic, this shows the audience that the two people in the tent are travelling and are prepared to leave any minute. The small size of the gun in Black Larson's pocket shows that he wasn't prepared for a fight when he left, however the audience can discover that from this he is always on guard.
The location of this scene is in the middle of a snow storm. This means that it requires minimal detail in the background and that it could be easily filmed in a studio.
The lighting in this scene is very bright compared to the dark apparel of the characters. The brightness of the 'snow' could pose as lighting itself, meaning there is no need for extra lighting for the characters.
The camera angles in this scene show medium close ups (Black Larson) which allow the audience to see the character's expression, long shots (fight scene) where the audience can get a full view of everything happening in the scene, extreme close ups (Black Larson pulls the gun out) where the audience can see minor details that they may have missed otherwise, and an extreme long shot (where the second person joins) Where the audience can see other details that they may have missed otherwise. The camera movement is mostly stationary.
The sound in this scene is non-diegetic with text for the dialogue and music edited over the top.
The editing in this scene mainly consists of quick and simple cuts from clip to clip.

Scene 3 (1:28:18-1:28:41)

In this scene, there is a great difference in costume compared to earlier in the film. The costume consists of expensive attire, for example, Chaplin is wearing a well fitted suit and has a cane and Big Jim is wearing a big fur coat with a top hat. This shows that their wealth has risen very high compared to the scenes before that.
Chaplin seems to wear dark makeup that adds depth to his facial features so they show up on screen in black and white.
There are a lot of props in the scene that look as if they would cost a lot of money which further indicates the wealth of the two men. There's also a camera included which indicates to the audience that the men have become famous or popular. There are props in the scene that Chaplin doesn't seem to understand, for example the cigar, the fact that Chaplin doesn't seem to understand what the prop is for tells the audience that he has not had any experience with being rich and that he is new to the situation.
The location of the scene is set on a boat. This would be hard to replicate in a studio in 1925 because there would only be a limited amount of space and budget to provide the set, so they would have most probably filmed the scene on a real boat.
The lighting for the scene is mainly in natural light so they would have filmed during the day in order to get the actual light. When they move into the room, it's quite dimly lit so the lighting would mainly consist of lamps or natural light coming through the window.
The camera angles in this scene mainly consist of mid shots in order to show most of the scene without going as far as a long shot. The mid shot also allows the audience to feel more included in the conversation. The camera movement was stationary.
The sound in this scene is non-diegetic with music played over the scene. Again, the dialogue is narrated in the form of text.
The editing in this scene mainly consists of quick and simple cuts from clip to clip.
